Summit of the Americas: Like the cool kids’ lunch table

I’ve been reading up on the Summit of the Americas, to be held in Cartagena, Colombia in mid-April (I’ll be there just a week before the prez!). The summit is an annual series of meetings between leaders the Organization of American States (North, Central, South America and the Caribbean.) It’s all over Colombian news because it will be hosted here. Latin American politics and leaders fascinate me so I’m keeping tabs.

Right now, my understanding is as follows:

Cuba wants to go, but technically isn’t allowed to go because it’s not a democracy (oh, that again.)

Cuba swears it doesn’t really want to go, and never asked if it could go.

The OAS said that Colombia can decide if Cuba gets to go.

Washington doesn’t want Cuba to go because it isn’t a democracy, and because Obama needs to be popular with the Miamians (Miamites?) so he can win Florida in 2012.

Miamians/ites don’t like the Castros.

Colombia kinda likes Cuba but can’t let them come or Washington will be mad.

Colombia went to Cuba to ask if it was ok if they didn’t go because it was awkward with Washington, and Cuba said no hard feelings, we understand and we’re still cool with you.

Colombia likes to be on Washington’s good side.

Ecuador doesn’t want to go if Cuba can’t go, but might go anyway because Cuba isn’t too mad about the whole situation.

Bolivia doesn’t want to go if Cuba can’t go, but might go anyway because Cuba isn’t too mad about the whole situation.

Venezuela is tight with Cuba, not so much at all with Washington, and I’ve been reading all of this in Spanish so I can’t tell you if Venezuela will actually be in attendance.

Central America is going to the Summit, and asked Colombia permission if they can talk about legalizing drugs. Colombia said it’s cool as long as Washington said it’s cool.

Washington said it’s cool even though their contribution to the talk is NO.

Later, almost everyone except Washington and Colombia are going to another party called Alba (Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas.) Leftists and Latinos only.
